DEALING WITH CRITICISM

Dealing with criticism can be very painful, but it’ll be a big mistake to quit an endeavor just because someone criticizes you or your work. The difference between people who achieve their goals and those who don’t depends on how they perceive and use criticism.

Instead of giving up, take a deep breath. Then determine whether the criticism is constructive and how to relate to it. Most successful people welcome constructive criticism. By extracting valid points and suggestions from criticism, they learn, improve, and continue to press on toward their goal. On the other hand, over-sensitive people let the criticism from others, whether constructive or not, sap their confidence and deflate their enthusiasm.

When you let criticism get the best of you, you’ll stop working and eventually give up on achieving your dreams. David Brinkley once remarked, “A successful man is one who can lay a firm foundation with the bricks that others throw at him.”

However, it’s important for us to know that as hard as criticism may be hard to accept, it can help us to overcome hurdles and may speed our progress to get what we want. As children of the Most High, let us always remember the words of the Apostle James, “…count it all joy when you go through diverse trials…” (James 1: 2). It doesn’t matter who your critics are, you can use those stones of criticism, and turn them to your stepping stones for success!
